Stage Combat Training

JEFF A.R. JONES has been a Certified Teacher of stage combat since his first certification in 1995 with the Society of American Fight Directors (SAFD), with regular recertification procedures every three years.  In 2013, he also became a Certified Instructor of Theatrical Firearms.  He has taught regular classes in Raleigh, NC since 1997 through his class company Collaborative Combat Movement Arts (originally Stage Combat Academy of NC).  He has taught certification classes in all of the SAFD weapons disciplines, and has prepared students for over 200 certification tests with a 99+% pass rate.  He has taught full courses at Elon University, Duke University, William Peace University, Florida State University, and has taught shorter courses or workshops at UNC Professional Actor Training Program, FSU/Asolo Actor Conservatory, University of North Carolina at Wilmington, Virginia Governor’s School of the Arts, Springer Theatre Academy, and Cardinal Gibbons High School.  He has been an Instructor at national and international stage combat and theatre conferences, including the Patrick Crean International Workshop (in Edinburgh, Scotland and Banff, Canada), SAFD National Stage Combat Workshop, SAFD Fight Directors’ Retreat, Philadelphia Stage Combat Workshop, and Virginia Beach Bash.  In addition to teaching the 8 basic weapon styles (Unarmed, Knife, Single Sword, Rapier & Dagger, Smallsword, Broadsword, Sword & Shield, Quarterstaff) and Theatrical Firearms, he also teaches Contemporary Violence, Impulse-Driven Violence, Film Fighting, Found Weapons, Rapier & Cloak, Rapier & Buckler, Rapier & Gauntlet, Axe, Axe & Sword, Axe & Shield, Whip, Lightsaber, Mixed Weapons, Imagined Weapons, Bound Duelling, Running with Sharp Objects, Falls & Rolls, Mass Battles, Group Fights, Choreography, Character and Story Choices, Scoring the Fight, Ballet Fights, Combat for Opera, Blood Effects, History of Swordplay, Physiology of Wounds and Kills, Costumes and Combat, and others.  His approach is to make the safety techniques second nature so students can learn how to apply the acting process to the fight for dynamic character and plot driven fight stories.
